Australia Abstains From U.N. Vote.

So, the Australian Labor government spends tax payer money in getting a U.N. Security Council seat so that Australia can have a bigger influence and a greater voice in international affairs. Great.

Which is why we are abstaining from our first vote.

What?

Australia is abstaining from a vote to give Palestine increased U.N. status.

It seems the only person with any sense on this issue is Julia Gillard.

A major reason cabinet differs on this is because many ministers hold marginal seats - some with high Muslim and Arab populations. With an election next year, it pays not to upset the vocal minorities.

Which raises the question. If the federal vote of Arab immigrants hinges on whether or not Australia supports increased U.N. status for Palestine, why did those immigrants even bother to apply for Australian citizenship. I mean, you come to a new country, you leave your old land behind. Whether or not Palestine has increased status shouldn't matter on iota to new immigrants. They are AUSTRALIAN now.

I respect the right of all Australians to have an opinion. But if some electorates have a majority of electors who are pro Palestine and possibly, though not always, anti Israel, then we need to reassess the kinds of immigrants we are taking in.
